Excel Right Left and Mid Functions

Excel Right, Left and Mid functions return number of characters from selected text. These formulas can be used to get a pattern of characters from string. These formulas have same syntax in Excel 2003, 2010, 2007 and 2013.The Excel LEFT function can be used both as a worksheet function and a VBA function. The LEFT function returns the specified number of characters in a text string, starting from the first or left-most character. Use this function to extract a sub-string from the left part of a text string. Lets start with Right Function:

Excel Right Function

Excel Right function returns specific number of characters of selected text from right side. The Excel RIGHT function can be used both as a worksheet function and a VBA function. The RIGHT function returns the specified number of characters in a text string, starting from the last or right-most character. Use this function to extract a sub-string from the right part of a text string.

Syntax

=RIGHT(“Text”, Count of characters to be returned)

Excel Left Function

Excel Left function returns specific number of characters of selected text from left side. The Excel LEFT function can be used both as a worksheet function and a VBA function. The LEFT function returns the specified number of characters in a text string, starting from the first or left-most character. Use this function to extract a sub-string from the left part of a text string.

Syntax

=LEFT(“Text”, Count of characters to be returned)

Excel Mid Function

>Excel Mid function returns numbers of characters from middle of a text, starting from the specified character in formula. The Excel MID function can be used both as a worksheet function and a VBA function. The MID function returns the specified number of characters in a text string, starting from a specified position (ie. starting from a specified character number). Use this function to extract a sub-string from any part of a text string.

Syntax

=LEFT(“Text”, Count of characters to be returned)
